Biography
Dr Anne Nakagiri is a Lecturer at the Department of Civil and Building Engineering (DCBE), Faculty of Engineering, Kyambogo University Kampala. Her specialization and research interests are in water and sanitation. Besides lecturing and supervising students, Dr. Nakagiri is currently working with the Department of Civil and Envirionmental Engineering, CEDAT, Makerere University to transfer a IHE Delft based Master of Science in Sanitation to the DCBE.
Dr Nakagiri has researched low-cost sanitation systems. Specific focus was on understanding the processes around and within to pit latrines urban settings as to improve their performance (filling, smell and insect nuisances) of within. Studies included status assessments to determine predictors of pit latrine performance; the use of design of experiments, factorial design and response surface methodology to investigate the degradation of faecal matter with microorganisms; used fingerprinting techniques that is Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) – Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (DGGE) to establish the diversity of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene and fungi 18S rDNA genes. She is a Registered Civil Engineer with fifteen years’ experience in Civil works, water supply and environmental engineering with specialised knowledge in the design, tender documentation tendering, tender evaluation and construction supervision of infrastructure for Civil, water supply, sanitation systems, wastewater and faecal sludge. Vast Experience in preliminary and detailed design to include bid document preparation, project costing, project management, construction supervision and environmental health and safety inspections.
Dr Nakagiri has also acted as a peer reviewer on sanitation articles. She holds a PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering; a Master’s and Bachelor of Science Degrees in Civil Engineering all from Makerere University. In addition, she has three (3) ISI Journal articles in sanitation.
